چکیده

As extreme events increase in frequency, flow-disrupting large-scale structures become ever more susceptible to collapse due local scour effects. The objective of this study was validate the functionality passive, flow-excited sensors that can continue operate during an event. sensors, or piezo-rods, feature continuous piezoelectric polymer strips embedded within and along length slender cylindrical rods, which could then be driven into soil where is expected. When erodes away foundation material reveal a portion piezo-rod, ambient fluid flow excitations would cause element output voltage response corresponding dynamic bending strains sensor. dependent on both structural properties sensor excitation fluid’s velocity. By monitoring shedding frequency velocity, exposed piezo-rod (or depth) calculated. Two series experimental tests were conducted work: (1) sediment around mock pier collect data, (2) used monitor its own by collecting vortex-shedding data varied velocities establish velocity–frequency relationship. results showed successfully captured comparable state-of-practice testing. A one-dimensional numerical model developed using relationship accuracy voltage-based prediction piezo-rod. Two-dimensional modeling also performed for predicting localized complex field. These velocities, conjunction with relationship, greatly improve length-predictive capabilities.

A study of several vortex-induced vibration techniques for piezoelectric wind energy harvesting [7977-14]

This paper discusses a preliminary study on harnessing energy from piezoelectric transducers by using bluff body and vortex-induced vibration phenomena. Structures like bridges and buildings tend to deform and crack due to chaotic fluid-structure interactions. The rapid variation of pressure and velocity can be tapped and used to power structural health monitoring systems. The proposed device i...
